Kalida Mesaudi je tačno četiri godine starija od njene zemlje Alžira, koji je 1962. godine nastao nakon krvavih borbi za osvajanje nezavisnosti i oslobođenje od francuske kolonijalizacije. Rasla je sa dva brata i dve sestre u uglednoj kabiliskoj porodici. Tu je i upoznala alžirski islam koji je u svom izvornom obliku dosta tolerantan: Svaki čovek je odgovoran samo Bogu, a privatnost vere se poštuje.

Otac, državni službenik, hteo je da joj pruži što je moguće bolje vaspitanje. Tako je Mesaudi posećivala veoma uglednu žensku gimnaziju. Ovde se morala susresti sa arabizacijom školstva, jednom od mnogih pogrešnih odluka vladajuće socijalističko-vojne partije jedinstva FLN (Front nacionalne slobode), te sa sistemom kojeg su obežavale korupcije i prividna privreda. 1982. Mesaudi je počela raditi kao nastavnica matematike. Ona se pokušala boriti protiv arabiziranja i islamiziranja obrazovnog sistema, te se zalagala za održanje svetskog standarda u vaspitanju dece.

Tek početkom 80-tih godina po prvi put se politički oglasila, kada se izjasnila protiv novih po žene nepravednih zakona FLN-režima. Novi izborni zakon odobravao je muškarcima da glasaju umesto njihovih žena. Novi zakon o porodičnom pravu, potcrtavao je da žene celi svoj život ostaju zavisne od muških pripadnika svoje porodice, dakle od njihovih supruga. U brakorazvodnom pravu, te u zakonima o nasledstvu žene su bile oštećene. Ovi zakoni predstavljali su kršenje Ustava, koji je i za žene i za muškarce propisivao jednaka prava i obaveze. Zajedno sa feministkinjama, komunistkinjama i starim partizankama iz oslobodilačkog rata Kalida Mesaudi sakupila je 10.000 potpisa protiv novih propisa porodičnog prava i sa hiljadama žena organizovala demonstracije na ulicama. Zakon o putovanjima zbog stvarno jakog pritiska žena morao je biti povučen, ali je zakon o porodičnom pravu, ipak, uspostavljen 1984. godine. Ovo je bio još jedan korak vlade koja je zemlju udaljavala od demokratije i vodila je prema islamizaciji.

15. marta 1985. godine Mesaudi je sa svojim saradnicama i istomišljenicama osnovala „Udruženje za jednakost muškaraca i žena pred zakonom“, koje je postojalo do 1989. (="Association pour l’egalité devant la loi entre les femmes et les hommes"), ona je postala preteča građanskog alžirkog pokreta za prava žena, osim toga ona je velika simpatizerka kulturnog pokreta Kabila koji zahtevaju priznavanje njenog jezika i kulture.

1988. godine nakon veoma teških nemira vlada se odlučila da demokratizacijom potraži izlaz iz teške socijalno-ekonomske situacije. Ovo je imalo za posledicu organizovanje više od 50 partija i časopisa koji su kritikovali vladu. Ovo otvaranje nije dozvolilo organizovanje samo levičarsko-liberalnih partija kakva je bila RCD (Udruženje za kulturu i demokratiju) kojem je bliska bila i Kalida Mesaudi, već i organizovanje islamističkih partija kao što je FIS (Islamski sveti front). 1990. godine Mesaudi je osnovala feminističko „Nezavisno udruženje za dobivanje prava žena“ ("Association indépendant pour le triomphe des droits des femmes" AITDF), i postala njegova predsednica.
